Am I Working On Labor Day?

The answer is obviously a resounding YES. True, I may not be doing anything other than writing this short holiday blog, but that’s still technically work because I learned in physics that work is is the amount of energy transferred by a force acting through a distance in the direction of the force. My friends, I am that force.

May I be with you.

Special Holiday Box Office Results:

  1. Apollo Eighteen // The Help (Again!)
  2. Shark Fest: Revenge of the Sharkening // The Debt
  3. The Help // Apollo 18
  4. Columbiana // Three Dimensional Sharks
  5. Apes, Still (Correct!)

Alas, another week in which I only properly guess one. I didn’t even really get all the films that made the top 5, as I erroneously replaced The Debt with Columbiana. How foolish of me! I knew it when I was writing it, too: that there were already too many action films in the top 5 to accommodate Columbiana. Oh well. I’m still not really sure what The Debt is, but apparently it was more appetizing than either Apollo or Sharks, which I guess is a good thing. What continues to surprise me is that The Help is still number one. It’s already made over $118m domestic, putting it at #8 for all-time summer-released dramas. I know, right? And just glancing at the other 7 in that list, I think 6 of them have won Oscars, so there’s that. Remember that come February when you’re considering going up against me in the annual Oscar-pool. I will win. I cannot be stopped.

I'm a lot like Wesley Snipes.

So, yeah. The Whole Love is pretty dang good. It feels like what their last album would be if their last album (entitled Wilco) was a few tracks longer. If you’ve heard I Might (on the radio or elsewhere) it should give you a good idea as to what 50% of the album is. I don’t mean that 50% of it is garage rock, rather 50% of it seems like it’s gonna take more than one listen to really grow on me. There are one or two songs that I can definitely say just plain don’t work from a Wilco perspective, but that’s to be expected on any of their albums, really. The opening and ending tracks are both fantastic though, breaching the 7min mark and managing to be more driving and impactful than really anything else on the album. Tracks like Black Moon, Open Mind and Rising Red Lung all have a very Being There feel about them, and they unsurprisingly end up being my favorite on the album, whereas The Whole Love, Dawned On Me, and I Might are a bit more pop-oriented but still quite good. I decided that I’m definitely going to purchase it when it comes out in two weeks, at which point I can probably better review it. ALSO, there’s going to be a two-disc double deluxe CD thing that has 4 bonus tracks, and the vinyl also has a bonus track, so I’ll have to secure those five songs to review as well. All in all I’d say “Wilco: now more than ever”. Or something. B-.

Circa "Sky Blue Sky". A bit has changed since then.

Have a safe rest of your holiday, all.

“The Whole Love”

It will only be up until noon tomorrow, so make sure to check it out while you can. Also, they provide a link to preorder from their site, if’n that’s your thing.
